Caught in the Crunch.
Rebecca Ansell and John Taber. 188 pages.
Caught in the Crunch will shake any assumptions about the stability of our planet. It tells you what to expect in the event of an earthquake or eruption, and explains why New Zealand is so prone to such phenomena. The extreme forces that have shaped our country are described, using diagrams, photographs and interviews with survivors of our worst earthquakes.

We live in a country that sits astride a geological time-bomb, as the recent eruption of Mount Ruapehu has demonstrated. This book opens a window on the world beneath our feet.

Awesome Forces.
Geoff Hicks and Hamish Campbell. 159 pages. BK64.
New Zealand is a long, thin country, situated on the boundary between two of the Earth's gigantic crustal plates. The central ridge of mountain ranges, stretching from Fiordland to East Cape like a knobbly backbone, has been pushed up by huge earth processes as one plate collides and grinds against the other. Add to this the interaction of steep slopes and a climate that dumps a lot of water on them and you have a formula for collapse - landslide!

The huge faults that run like railway tracks through the central part of the country are also created by the confrontation of the plates, as the Pacific Plate tries to squeeze under the Australian Plate. The result? About 17,000 earthquakes each year! The lofty volcanic cones of the central North Island are minor compared with mighty Taupo, one of the most explosive and active volcanoes in the world. Even our position in the Southwest Pacific, surrounded by deep ocean, makes us vulnerable to tsunami - and some pretty vigorous weather!

All New Zealanders will encounter at least one of these hazards in their lives, just by virtue of living here. Awesome Forces is a book that everyone needs to read, in order to understand the hazards that threaten this beautiful, unstable land - and learn what they can do to survive them. It has been written by some of New Zealand's leading scientists.

The Rise and Fall of the Southern Alps.
Glen Coates. Illustrations by Geoffrey Cox. 80 pages. BK69.
The Southern Alps/Ka Tirtiri O Te Moana are New Zealand's largest structural feature. Running through most of length of the South Island, they cross the Roaring Forties and divide the island into two distinct regions, east and west, each with its own unique climate, landscape and lifeforms.

In this new book, geologist Glen Coates tells how the alps were formed from ancient marine sediments, how they are being eroded down to produce the spectacular landscape seen today in the South Island.

Even in just the past few million years vast blocks of land have been shunted incredible distances, and today frequent earthquakes remind us that this is a restless part of the Earth where mountain-building is still in full swing. Rivers and glaciers have carved out a multitude of valleys and ranges, and wide plains have spread out at the mountains' feet. All this is told in vivid, non-technical language and copiously illustrated with colour photographs and artwork. The result is a book that will fascinate all who take an interest in their landscape and heritage.

Vanishing Volcanoes: A guide to the landforms and rock formations of Coromandel Peninsula. 1992. By Lloyd Homer and Phil Moore.

The Coromandel Peninsual is a land of ancient volcanoes. Born of violent explosions millions of years ago, the land has been slowly worn down by time and water. Today it is hard to believe that this land of bush-clad hills, sparkling streams, and sandy beaches was once a smouldering desolate place. But the clues are there for those who look. This book will be appreciated by those with a love of the outdoors.
